Attitude on money

    Money. A concept that can bring so many disputes.

    As a design student, talking about his topic could make many jump. Profit was almost like a word-that-must-not-be-said, with a similar response to industries, clients, or businesses. I found it ridiculous, especially studying a career like industrial design, where it is part of the profession. Money was evil and I felt like an alien for thinking differently. For me, money is not good or bad. Is a practical concept that allows us to measure the value of our work. Sometimes is underrated and others are overrated.

    One biblical story that struck me on the concept of money since I was a child, was from Joseph son of Israel. He was sold by his brethren becoming a slave. Under the dire circumstances he was in, he continued to be diligent in keeping the commandments and in his work ethic. His attitude and blessings led him to be respected and everything he did prosper. Even after he was unfairly imprisoned he became the prison's overseer. And finally, after he interpreted the Pharaoh's dream and gave him wise advice on how to manage the imminent famine, was appointed as vice-regent. Because of his journey, he was in a position to bless the lives of countless people, including his family.

    I believe, that being in a position that we can bless others is desirable and God wants us to prosper. In this view, where we see money- or whatever exchange that arises in the future- as a tool to help others and not something that we use to take advantage of is what makes the difference. And like Joseph, money shouldn't be what motivates us or our goal. It will come as a consequence of our good actions. 

    Some rules recommended for prospering from Stephen W. Gibson, author of the talk called "Attitude on Money," which inspires this reflection:

Rule 1. Seek the Lord and have hope in Him

Rule 2. Keep the commandments 

Rule 3. Think about money and plan how you can become self-reliant

Rule 4. Take advantage of chances for learning so you will not be ignorant of these matters

Rule 5. Learn the laws upon which the blessings of wealth are predicated 

Rule 6. Do not send away the naked, the hungry, the thirsty or the sick, or those who are held captive
